Abstract
This research aims to study the problems, problem solving and mental health of the elderly persons in Muang district of MahaSarakham province, who are transient guardians of their grandchildren. This study is qualitative research, which uses the methodology of phenomenological research with the experiences of the 8 elderly persons in the urban area, who are selected by the purposive sampling method, and are glad and agree to share their experiences with in-depth interview and observation. After that, the collected data were processed, extracted and analyzed by using software. As a result, the elderly people agree that child care is not considered a burdensome task, but they are happy. They need to care for their grandchild, because they believe that they can take care of them better than others. However, when caring for the child, the problems of old persons are health and economic. The common health problems are knee and back pain. The income and expenses are not balanced, which is a common economic problem. Because, most of the income comes from the parents of their grandchild and it is insufficient. Finding the parental care problems, infants or young children are often sick, eat less and sleep less so that older people can be exposed and they have to manipulate their emotions by controlling and escaping from that situation, then they try to solve the problem. For the mental health, the most of elderly persons have normal mental with no high stress.Nevertheless, the mental health is related with the physical health problems and economic problems
