Barriers to the Quality of Parent-Adolescent Communication in Thailand: An Ecological System Analysis

Abstract

Thailand has undergone rapid economic and social changes over the past three decades. These changes have contributed to an increase in behavioral and mental health problems among Thai adolescents. Several studies have indicated that poor-quality communication between parents and adolescents is associated with a rise in behavioral and mental health issues in this population.

Examples of economic and social changes over the past three decades include:

• The changing role of mothers
• Increased technology consumption among adolescents
• Parental migration for work
• The rise of single-parent families, divorce, and skipped-generation households (where grandparents raise grandchildren)skipped generation households)

These may be key factors contributing to barriers in the quality of communication between Thai parents and adolescents.

This study is a review paper that examines research published between 2007 and 2017 from six databases. It employs Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems framework to analyze how Thailand’s economic and social changes over the past three decades may have influenced the quality of communication between parents and Thai adolescents (aged 10–24 years).review paper) โดยศึกษางานวิจัยที่ตีพิมพ์ระหว่างปี 2007 – 2017 จากฐานข้อมูล 6 แห่ง โดยใช้กรอบแนวคิด Bronfenbrenner’s ecological system เพื่อวิเคราะห์ว่า การเปลี่ยนแปลงทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคมของไทยในช่วงสามทศวรรษที่ผ่านมา อาจส่งผลต่อคุณภาพการสื่อสารระหว่างพ่อแม่และวัยรุ่นไทย (ช่วงอายุ 10-24 ปี) อย่างไร

Approaches to enhancing and maintaining the quality of communication between parents and adolescents have been discussed at various levels, including: ได้รับการอภิปรายในระดับต่าง ๆ ได้แก่

• Microsystem (ครอบครัวและสภาพแวดล้อมใกล้ชิด)
• Mesosystem (ปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างบริบทที่วัยรุ่นเกี่ยวข้อง)
• Exosystem (โครงสร้างทางสังคมและเศรษฐกิจที่ส่งผลต่อครอบครัว)
• Macrosystem (บรรทัดฐาน วัฒนธรรม และนโยบายของสังคมโดยรวม)

This review calls on family researchers to pay greater attention to and further investigate the impacts of these changes on the quality of parent-adolescent communication in Thailand in the future.
