Abstract

The objectives of this study were to examine level of parenting stress and factors associated with parenting stress among grandmothers who raised their infant grandchildren. A total sample of 100 grandmothers who were primary caregivers of their infant grandchildren of at least 1 month in Ubon Ratchathani province, Roi-ed province, and Sakolnakorn province was recruited in the study by using multi-staged random sampling technique. Data were collected by using questionnaires including the Parenting Stress Index Short Form, the caregiver burden questionnaires, the self-esteem questionnaire, and the social support questionnaire.

Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics and Pearson product moment correlation coefficients. The results showed that 36% of grandmothers reported high level of parenting stress. Factors that had significant positive relationship with parenting stress were caregiving burden in the aspects of financial (r =.249, p<.05), daily activities (r =.306, p<.01) and health (r =.350, p<.01). Self-esteem and family social support were found to have significant negative relationship with parenting stress (r = -.266, p<.01; r = -.314, p<.01 respectively). These findings suggest that nurses should monitor and assess stress level of grandparents who were primary caregivers of grandchildren and provide appropriate interventions by focusing on promoting social support and decreasing caregiver burden.
